Commercial Extras Talent Listing Service

Background (Extra), Audience (Compensated), Casting Companies, Calling Services, Union and Non-Union.

There is a new service called 'Commercial Extras' that is a talent listing service for background performers looking to do commercial work.

From the site, it seems they charge a 10% for booked assignments but when I looked at the FAQ page, they also charge a $30 "administrative fee". To my understanding, these services are not supposed to charge upfront fees, but I am wondering if they at least get people work.

Any good or bad experiences with them?

I've heard of a few people getting work with Commercial Extras but only a few so far; they're still a fairly new service at the time I am typing this. If anyone gets any work with them, either SAG-AFTRA or non-union, could you add a post to this thread?

Commercial Extras say they are a "talent listing service" as defined by California Labor Code 1701g ... &file=1701
To find out what a talent service has to do read California Labor Code 1703, 1703.1, and 1703.3,
and what a talent service is not allowed to do read California Labor Code 1703.4 ... 703-1703.6

They have filed a $50000 bond with the state Labor Commissioner, which is what an "advance-fee talent service" (as defined by California Labor Code 1702.1) has to do. ... 702-1702.4
I recently counted 102 companies in California that have posted bonds according to the DIR, including Actors Access, Cricket Feet, Cut Above, Background Talent, Face2Face, Idell James, Jessica's A List, and Joey's. The bonds with ExtraExtra and Extras on Avail are now canceled. The link is on the "LA brings criminal charges against talent services" thread.

For more information click on the links for the California Labor Code. Remember that you are not required to join any service to to background work. There is more information about advance-fee talent services in the book "Extra Work for Brain Surgeons".

Report Commercial Extras SCAM today.

This agency is a SCAM.
Have you paid a $40 cash registration fee to Mark Tippmann (owner of Commercial Extras and never been booked?
He is running new registration every three months, and not submitting already registered people.
Act today and contact Better Business Bureau and file a complaint.

I am surprised many talent listing agencies are not on that DIR list.

At least Mark Tippmann/Commercial Extras is listed here
(I posted this link on another thread, here it is again): ... s-2012.xls

I would recommend that anyone thinking of joining a "talent listing service" or an "advance-fee talent representation service" should familiarize themselves with the relevant parts of the California Labor Code (stated above), particularly if they are not originally from California, and have recently arrived or will be moving to California. (Hopefully people outside of California will also be reading this.)
There is also some relevant information about California labor laws on the Better Business Bureau's website.

Commercial Extras also has the following social networking pages where they have posted information about roles that people can submit to:

Remember that if you act soon enough, i.e. within 10 days for e.g. a "talent listing service" (as per CLC 1703a), you may be able to get all of your money back.

Here's my issue with Commercial casting.

I went to the registration day on June 9th. They were harried and trying to rush all of us through at the end of the day. Several of us ( 4 or 5) didn't realize it was cash ONLY for the 40$ reg fee. It didn't specify that in the email which I pulled up and read to them. We all went to the groceria ATM and came back.
I registered as Liisa Lee. My slate for pictures taken that day was Liisa Lee. But in the on line registration they ask for a legal name. I figured, just like SAG or AEA, it's for their records. Cool.
Not cool.

ON my picture and on the heading of my profile it lists my family name. That's not my SAG card name nor the name I will get paid doing SAG work with.
Mark put my family name ON the (really horrible) photo they took of me that day - even though the slate says Liisa Lee. (The heck?)

Mark has written me some very testy emails demanded that I change my profile back to my family name. In all my years of being a performing union member, I've never had this kind of problem before and never had anyone tell me I was wasting their time when they have made a mistake.
I called SAG today to ask specifically if it would matter to get hired for SAG work and the gent in the membership dept. was adamant that my SAG name be used for casting services of all kinds.

I have no idea what's up with Mark, but he has been quite demanding and hasn't responded to my last two letters and phone call.

I paid the reg fee. If he can't be professional, correct his own mistake, or prevent me from being cast because he's pissed off at me for this….then this booking company is not the professional service anyone needs to be working with.

If he responds I'll add a comment here. This whole experience has been one big……"what??"

Wow. What a nightmare with Mark D. Tippmann. This so-called agency is a total rip off. I have a shared experience with many of the people posting here. I signed on to the agency about three weeks at the Sunday registration. My first problem was that he was very rude on several emails for just asking directions to the registration and asking some basic questions.

BE CAREFUL! The photo he took of me by his supposed pro-photographer is MESS. My jacket looks like a pyschodelic slide show with weird shapes and colors, their are white specs all over my head, hair and beard. My beard is distorted also. It appears that someone has way over sharpened the image. This is NOT an acceptable image for display to casting people. I was not receiving any work and asked Tippmann to you correct the problems with the image.

Tippmann was more rude and arrogant then ever. He refused to give me a phone number and address for his place of business or home address and he will not respond or address my issues. Tippmann states that the image is fine. I asked for a refund and he will not refund my $40.00 fee or remove the image and replace. I am currently writing a complaint and intend on suing Mr. Tippmann in superior court!

I only got one assignment with CE and for that I had to give him 10% of the money I made that night, never mind the $40 for registration. I would not register with them again. I hope you win your case against them.

He makes both ways, from the BG and production.

I registered with Commercial Extras last year in June. We were told back then that is was a ONE TIME $40 registration fee. Now according to their website you have to pay $40 every year. I only got 1 job with them this whole year plus they took 10% of my check. I am not renewing with them. Also they very rarely post jobs that you can submit to maybe like 3 times a year.
